The Nordic team has a range of skills and experience to assist in meeting your graffiti problems.
Peter Robinson - CEO
Peter is one of the countries top authorities on the overall problem of graffiti, its causes, its cost (both monetary and social) and its removal and prevention. He is involved with many high profile organisations, local authorities and government departments. Peter is a member of the Management Committee of the Anti Graffiti Association, advising others on the best way of resolving this problem.
Other notable achievements include:
- winning prestigious graffiti removal contracts for various local authorities
- being recognised as a leading authority on graffiti removal and prevention by Crime Concern, Safer Cities Groups, Probation Service, Environment Agency, British Waterways and EnCams (Previously The Tidy Britain Group and Going For Green)
- co-hosting several ‘EnviroCrime’ Conferences as a partner with the London Boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich, also Southampton City Council and Thames 21.
- working closely on behalf of Nordic UK Limited with British Waterways and Thames 21. The relationship has been so positively developed that a special ‘graffiti’ barge travels throughout several London Boroughs with banners proclaiming this relationship.
- representing British Waterways and ENCAMS with graffiti clean ups involving the probation service, the Mayor of Westminster and The Secretary of State for The Environment, Michael Meacher.
- selected as partner by Railtrack (Network Rail) for an ongoing project to determine the best and safest methods for removing and protecting against graffiti track-side and at railway stations.
- Peter is a qualified trainer and has developed the first ever graffiti removal training course, which was subsequently accredited by the Open Colleges Network.
- In his spare time, Peter supports his local community helping people with special needs through Mencap become active and play sports.
Diane Shakespeare - Managing Director
Diane is a highly focused Senior Executive with proven track record in business planning, risk, stakeholder and staff management with total commitment to improving local environmental quality.
Qualifications include BSc (hons) in Business and Environmental Management, PG Dip Environmental Auditing, Associate Membership of The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. Other key achievements include:
- Over 13 years experience working for the organisation that runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, of which five have been at a senior level;
- Development and implementation of new business strategies for the organisation, moving it into new sectors;
- Worked closely with central, regional and local Government and advised on strategies and solutions for improving local environmental quality;
- Overall responsibility for the local environmental quality survey of England, which analyses and reports to Government on different issues such as litter, graffiti, fly-posting, fly-tipping and trade waste;
- Development of a new Training unit for the organisation, increasing sales growth, providing a wide range of courses to up-skill people on how to improve local environmental quality;
- Managed the marketing services of the organisation, including high profile public campaigns aimed at changing behaviour of litterers;
- Managed International programmes including the Blue Flag, Seaside Award and Eco-Schools;
- Developed National consultancy programmes aimed to improve local environmental quality including People & Places, and the Cleaner, Safer, Greener Network;
- Managed various corporate services such as IT, risk and performance management approved by the Charity Commission as exemplars.
David Smith - Business Development Director
David is responsible for heading up all sales across the organisation. As an ex Director of ENCAMS, and having headed up the Business Development function in ENCAMS (the Charity that runs the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign) he has strong networks and a wealth of experience regarding matters around environmental enhancement. David has also worked for over five years as an operational manager delivering waste / recycling services within Ryedale Council.
Susan Kirby - Head of Delivery
Susan joined the Nordic team in March 2009. Susan has worked within the education sector for almost 15 years and has a wealth of experience, working in both Further and Higher Education. Prior to joining Nordic, Susan worked for the Open College Network, where she had a high focus on quality, planning and systems, working at a strategic as well as operational level. Susan was introduced to Nordic in October 2002 when the first graffiti removal course was written and accredited by the Open College Network. Susan ensures that our courses are delivered to the highest standards, and that training delivery is undertaken in a standardised, efficient and professional manner. Susan assists in developing our training offer according to individual customer needs, therefore increasing responsiveness to customer demand. Susan also works with the Deputy Managing Director in translating Funding Policies into business opportunities, which helps us to expand our offering. Alongside the Quality and Planning Manager, Susan is a conduit between Training Providers, Nordic and its customers. Susan recently completed a BA(Hons) in Applied Business Management and holds a Teaching Certificate as well as Assessor and Internal Verification awards.
Ray Brown - Head of Training Business Development
Ray is responsible for sourcing new contracts and ensuring that customers and learners are progressing well with their training. Ray will also ensure that Government Policy and funder’s requirements are integrated into the training and development programme. Ray will undertake follow up meetings with customers to assist in reviewing and making recommendations on their training needs. He is a qualified trainer and assessor and holds a BA(Hons) in Post Compulsory Education. He is an experienced lecturer having delivered training to a variety of groups including the Home Office and the Scottish Police College. Ray is a specialist in conflict management and has delivered training and written and developed accredited courses for awarding bodies. Ray also has an NVQ Level 4 in IAG and is the company lead on our policy on working with vulnerable adults. Rays hobby is SCUBA diving and is an instructor with his local diving club. He has been lucky enough to dive all over the world, and spends many weekends on and under the sea off the Northumberland coast.
Cheryl Knaggs - Quality and Planning Manager
Cheryl joined Nordic as Training Manager in October 2008 and has since progressed into the role of Quality and Planning Manager. Cheryl is responsible for developing and delivering quality assurance systems to manage the progression of learners and to ensure that training delivery is maintained to the highest standard. Cheryl is also responsible for overseeing customer and care, and ensuring that all funding contract requirements are not only adhered to, but also meet the highest possible standards. She also oversees the planning of all training courses, ensuring that trainers and assessors have the resources they need to progress the training successfully. Cheryl has seven years experience of quality management at the Open College Network; she has recently completed a BA (Hons) in Education and holds a City and Guilds 7407 Teaching Certificate.
Richie Hawkins - Training Administrator
Richie joined the Admin Support Team in November 2009. He is responsible for preparing the Assessors’ paperwork and tracking the Assessment process through to Internal Verification.
Richie’s recent background is in broadcasting. He presented traffic & travel news bulletins for national and local BBC & commercial radio stations, becoming along the way the longest serving breakfast traffic presenter on BBC Three Counties Radio. He lists among his credits work at Virgin Radio, and has been a contributor to programmes on BBC Radio Sheffield, including twice writing poems for the station on National Poetry Day. He has presented numerous shows on Hospital Radio in London, including a 70s and 80s themed programme, a flagship sports show and Drivetime.
Richie also has a wealth of business experience, gained through various positions in Human Resources at Xerox, where he managed key projects such as employee satisfaction, graduate and placement recruitment, the implementation of the Working Time Directive and the transition of Corporate Healthcare providers. As an HR Analyst he managed the monthly headcount reporting process for the UK Company as a whole, with staff numbers in excess of 3,500, and redesigned the process to make it completely transparent and error-free.
Marion Lee Higson - Internal Verifier
Marion holds an impressive record of achievement gained in fast moving blue chip organisations where the highest standard of customer service and care are demanded.
Other notable achievements include
- The design and delivering of training and development courses.
- Creating and implementing a new manager training plan and toolkit.
- Led the creation and implementation of training and trial sites in preparation for contract growth.
- Developed and wrote a complex database to track recruitment, site visits, and succession planning for training and development needs of the individual.
- Trained managers to deliver induction training to new managers to promote and maintain quality standards throughout the U.K.
- Achieved an award for Employee of the Year 2006 nominated from ten thousand employees.
All the above achievements help Marion to develop effective relationships, with management teams, staff groups, clients and individuals to achieve outstanding results in her role as Lead Internal Verifier for Nordic.
Oliver Saul - Assessor
Oliver has worked in the education sector for nearly 4 years now, and has worked closely with a range of different colleges and training providers along the way. Oliver joined Nordic in April 2010 and is one of our most recent additions to the team. Prior to joining Nordic Oliver had an extensive period working in Retail management, and whilst studying part time was able to Graduate from Derby University Business School in 2005. Oliver is now back at the University Studying part-time towards a Masters Degree in Business and Executive Coaching. This course has given him some fantastic skills in being able to get the best out of people and facilitate the learner journey. Research shows that adapting a coaching method towards training and development can gain fantastic results from people and organisations as a whole, and this is why he is suited well to being an assessor. Oliver gained the A1 Assessing using a range of methods qualification in 2007, and has since gained a level 3 qualification in Teaching and Training.
Iain Collier - Assessor
Iain works as an assessor for Nordic and has many years experience of providing learners with opportunities to obtain qualifications. Working in a team has always been important to him and he enjoys providing our learners with a personal approach to their development. He has mostly lived and worked in the North East and live in rural County Durham which means that he can walk his beagle Max. He is a family man, and enjoys keeping fit, travelling and spending time in the countryside which surrounds us at home.
Steve Wilde - Trainer
Steve Wilde has a background covering geology, environmental science, waste management, health and safety. He has provided interim management for local authority environmental services covering street cleaning, refuse collection, waste minimisation and recycling as well as graffiti removal. Steve has worked on North Sea Oil rigs, mines and quarries and large waste companies and major charities covering health and safety, waste management and management issues. He has been a trainer for over 15 years and has done the odd bit of University lecturing. He's written multiple choice questionnaires for the NVQ level 2 in Cleaning and Support Services for City and Guilds and has a PETTLS training qualification.
He's a keen home brewer and DIY nut - he's planning to build a wind turbine and solar water heater this year to combine his two passions, the environment and DIY!
Steve Hedges - Client Liaison Manager
Steve has over two years experience as a trained graffiti removal operative and manager, which gives him an excellent insight to what our customers want and need. Steve prides himself on working to high standards and provides the best service for his customers.
Steve is experienced in health and safety and risk assessments plus has knowledge of Chapter 8 and site management. He prides himself on offering an honest service which will be to the best of his knowledge at all times through his expert understanding of graffiti and its problems. Steve is a qualified trainer and supports Nordic in the delivery of our graffiti removal training. He has also set up projects with the probation services, young offenders and voluntary groups.
Stacey Hewling - Finance Officer
Stacey helps to run the financial side of Nordic along with the Finance Manager Bob. Her role within the company is to process customer, as well as supplier invoices. Stacey is the first point of contact for creditors and debtors and also manages the payroll for all employees in the company.
Keith Hall - Contracts Supervisor
Keith has also been with Nordic over four years, and has worked on some of Nordic's longer term maintenance contracts, including Milton Keynes, Watford and Westminster. Keith is also a professionally accredited graffiti removal expert, and is qualified in the removal of all types of graffiti and fly-posting.
Alan Hutchinson - Non-Executive Director
As a highly successful business leader, Alan has over 28 years professional business experience of acquisitions and mergers in a range of different sectors and fields. His experience includes directing sales, and I.T. recruitment business development. Alan has led corporate growth of many businesses to in excess of £98 million. In recent years, his smart business acumen led him to acquire, consolidate, restructure and sell five I.T. recruitment and consultancy related businesses from a buy and build strategy. He is a senior shareholder of Nordic and provides advice and support to the senior management around strategy, sales and growth.
In his spare time, Alan enjoys riding his motorcycle and spending time in Spain absorbing the culture and sunshine.
Geoff Mullet - Non Executive Director
Geoff has been a director of Nordic since its formation and is company secretary. Over his business career Geoff has been a director of a number of companies both in the UK and Europe in a variety of market sectors. He has particular expertise in start up and interim management environments.
