About Training

The benefits of training are often not recognised but it should be remembered that they are shared between both the employer and their employees. It is a proven fact that these qualifications improve productivity, performance and best practice, whilst also improving retention of staff. The benefits to the employee are often considerable, and include enhanced skills, progression opportunities, and increased motivation, but perhaps more importantly, the maximisation of potential.

This has been evidenced by the recent success of Nordic training. In the last year we have delivered over 1500 NVQ Level 2 qualifications to frontline staff on a national basis. Several of these candidates were taking accredited qualifications for the first time since leaving school they have achieved a 95% success rate. A number have since been either promoted or gone on to achieve further qualifications. This is evidence of the satisfaction and motivation that can be achieved by completing the right course, delivered in the right place by professional staff with workplace credibility.

Our training is primarily delivered to local authority cleaning staff as well as major national providers of environmental services. These courses have included Cleaning and Support Services and Local Environmental Services, but a number of students have also gone on to take additional courses in Team Leading whilst many have also voluntarily improved their ‘skills for life’ by taking additional courses to improve their literacy and numeracy. Our learner satisfaction rate is also 100% ? all learners have said that the training will help them to improve their skills and motivate them to undertake better work practices.

We have also grown our training offering to include specialist accredited courses and qualifications, particularly around high risk areas that frontline staff and those responsible for cleaning face. It is imperative that companies make sure that they take all practical steps to ensure their staff are safe whilst carrying out their day to day job. Risk assessments and full staff training are paramount for the safety of your staff and also in making your company secure against high compensation claims. That’s why companies need to invest in practical training that will educate and make staff personally aware of the risks to themselves and their colleagues.

The Cleaning Sector and the Challenges it Faces

Research by Asset Skills, the Sector Skills Council for the Cleaning sector demonstrates that there are themes and challenges to the way that training is delivered in the cleaning industry.

The Sector Qualification Strategy for Cleaning clearly outlines the following challenges and patterns:

Much learning takes place during short training courses, some of which is unaccredited. Whilst a large percentage of the workforce in housing, property and facilities management has qualifications, a large number of people in elementary level jobs in cleaning do not. Adult literacy, numeracy, language and employability skills are of particular importance in this latter group (and is something that we promote heavily at Nordic Pioneer).

The major challenges facing Asset Skills in relation to standards and qualifications are:
  • The large number of small companies in the footprint who have little commitment to or experience of qualifications;
  • An ageing workforce with a lack of recruitment of young people into the footprint due to no clear career pathways;
  • A changing skills mix as job roles are broadened and redefined;
  • Gaps in existing qualifications provision to cover certain job roles;
  • The need for a recognised qualifications structure covering all levels of competence;
  • Limited commitment from employers to engage in the assessment of competence;
  • A low skill base in certain parts of the industry;
  • Limited uptake and completion of apprenticeships.
